Steeped in history and commanding views of the Vienne River, the Château de Chinon is one of the Loire Valley’s most significant medieval fortresses. Built in the 10th century, it later became a strategic seat for the Plantagenet kings of England, most notably Henry II, who spent his final days there in 1189.
The château’s most legendary chapter unfolded in 1429, when a young Joan of Arc arrived to meet Charles VII. Her mission: to convince the future king of France to claim his throne. This powerful encounter is brought to life through immersive exhibits, multimedia displays, and interactive storytelling within the castle.
Visitors today can explore the fortress’s three main enclosures, Fort du Coudray, Château du Milieu, and Fort Saint-Georges , each revealing layers of medieval architecture, archaeological findings, and restored towers. The panoramic views over Chinon’s rooftops and the river below offer a striking contrast to the castle’s austere stone walls, making it a perfect stop for both history lovers and photographers.
