DESCRIPTION

The Île de la Cité represents the historic heart of Paris and the birthplace of the city once known as Lutetia during Roman times. Situated in the middle of the River Seine, this small island is where the story of Paris truly began. As visitors walk through its narrow streets and historic squares, they discover layers of history that span more than two thousand years, revealing the origins of the City of Light.

The island is home to some of Paris’s most remarkable monuments. Sainte-Chapelle, built in the 13th century by King Louis IX, is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. Famous for its breathtaking stained-glass windows, the chapel was created to house precious Christian relics and still dazzles visitors with vibrant colors and intricate biblical scenes.

Nearby stands the Conciergerie, once part of the medieval Palais de la Cité and later transformed into a prison during the French Revolution. Within its imposing halls and stone chambers, many prisoners awaited their fate, including Queen Marie-Antoinette. Exploring this monument offers a powerful glimpse into one of the most dramatic periods of French history.

The walk also leads to the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral, admired for its Gothic architecture, sculpted gargoyles, and rose windows. Visitors can also discover the elegant Place Dauphine, one of Paris’s historic royal squares, before strolling along the Quai de l’Horloge, where medieval towers such as the Caesar Tower and the Clock Tower still overlook the Seine.
