Following a pickup from your hotel, head on a 1-hour ride to a private Van Gogh tour in Auvers-sur-Oise, an open-air museum revealing details of Van Gogh's (1853-1890) final days. This village was home to Van Gogh for 70 days before his death. Both passionate and depressed, the painter was incredibly productive in Auvers-sur-Oise, inspired by its inhabitants, architecture, and nature. He created 70 paintings as well as numerous drawings.
Walk around the charming village and discover everything that inspired his paintings, from vast wheat fields and blue skies to farm cottages and the famous Gothic church of Auvers-sur-Oise, whose depiction reflected a different approach from that of the Impressionists.
After touring the village, head to the famous Auberge Ravoux, where Van Gogh rented his bedroom. This tiny room, with no furniture except a wooden chair, retains a special atmosphere as a place of memory for the artist. The landlords never rented Room No. 5 again. The room next door, occupied by artist Anton Hirschig, shows how artists lived at the end of the 19th century. The Ravoux Inn welcomes visitors in the authentic atmosphere of its dining room and café, almost unchanged since Van Gogh's time.
Afterwards, pay a final tribute to the painter by visiting his burial place. Van Gogh's grave lies beside that of his brother Theo, covered with green ivy. If time allows and you wish, you may also visit the Absinthe Museum and learn more about this fascinating chapter of local history.
*Please note that the Auberge Ravoux (Van Gogh's House) is open seasonally from March to November, Wednesday through Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The tour itinerary may be adjusted accordingly depending on opening days and times.
*This tour can be arranged with an English-speaking driver for transportation to and from Auvers-sur-Oise. If you would like commentary and guided visits, we recommend choosing either a driver-guide or a driver with a licensed guide, who will provide historical insights and accompany you throughout the experience.
