Set in the striking landscape above Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this hike explores the raw beauty of the Alpilles, a mountain range defined by sculpted limestone ridges and vast open views. The scenery feels both powerful and intimate, shaped by wind, light, and the distinctive Provençal vegetation that thrives in this dry, sunlit environment.
Along the trails, hikers encounter lone cypress trees silhouetted against the sky, stretches of aromatic garrigue, and dramatic viewpoints where the horizon seems endless. From certain vantage points, the views can extend as far as the Mediterranean Sea, creating a strong sense of space and elevation. The ever-changing light gives the landscape a different character throughout the day.
The Alpilles are also rich in cultural and artistic heritage. This is the region where Vincent Van Gogh spent the final year of his life, deeply inspired by these bold forms and contrasts. Walking through this scenery offers a meaningful connection between nature and art, where history and landscape are inseparable, timeless, and deeply moving.
Lower areas of the massif reveal a gentler side of Provence, with olive groves and renowned wine estates nestled into the foothills. A visit and tasting can be included along the way, adding a local and gourmet dimension to the hike. Guests may choose to bring their own picnic in their backpack, or we can arrange either a picnic lunch or a reservation at a restaurant.
