The Île de la Cité is the historic heart of Paris, often described as the birthplace of the city. More than two thousand years ago, this small island in the Seine was home to Lutetia, the Roman settlement that evolved into modern Paris. Over the centuries it became both the political and religious center of the capital, and its streets and monuments reveal the origins of the city.
At its center rises the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral, one of the greatest masterpieces of Gothic architecture. Visitors can admire its harmonious façade, sculpted portals, legendary gargoyles, and iconic twin towers overlooking the Seine. You will also have the opportunity to admire the interior of the cathedral, where the vast nave, soaring ribbed vaults, and luminous stained-glass windows create the impressive sense of height and light typical of Gothic architecture.
As the walk continues across the Île de la Cité, you will pass remarkable landmarks such as the Sainte-Chapelle, whose elegant Gothic architecture and slender spire can be admired, as well as the historic Conciergerie, once a royal palace and later a prison during the French Revolution where Marie Antoinette was held.
The stroll also leads to the charming Place Dauphine, a peaceful triangular square created in the early 17th century under King Henri IV. Nearby, the Pont Neuf, the oldest standing bridge in Paris, offers beautiful views of the Seine and completes this walk through one of the most historic and atmospheric parts of the city
