Deepen your understanding of Jewish history in Provence during the papacy’s residence in Avignon (1309–1377). While Jewish communities elsewhere in France and Europe faced expulsions and persecution, those living in the papal territories experienced a distinct and carefully regulated situation. Known as the “Pope’s Jews” or “Jews of the carrière,” they were placed under papal authority and granted protection and defined rights in exchange for specific taxes and obligations.
With your licensed guide, explore the major Jewish heritage sites of Provence. In Avignon, the former Jewish quarters reflect the structured and vibrant communal life that developed during the papal era. An optional visit to the Palais des Papes offers important historical context, illuminating the political and religious framework that shaped Jewish life at the time. (This visit can be included upon request.)
In Cavaillon, discover its remarkable 18th-century Baroque synagogue, which preserves a medieval staircase, the only remnant of the earlier building. The adjoining museum highlights the traditions, daily life, and resilience of the Jewish communities of the Comtat Venaissin across several centuries.
Another key stop is Carpentras, home to one of France’s oldest active synagogues, the Carpentras Synagogue, as well as a historic Jewish cemetery among the oldest in Europe. Together, these sites offer a meaningful and enriching insight into the centuries-old Jewish presence that has shaped the region’s cultural heritage.
*Please note that the Carpentras synagogue is closed on weekends and may be closed randomly on other days of the week.
*Similarly, the times for entering and visiting other Jewish sites are very restricted. We do everything possible to ensure that you can visit as many sites as possible, considering the time constraints as well.
*This itinerary is available from multiple departure cities and hotels throughout Provence.
